The Complete 12-Week ACCA SBR Study Plan for Working Professionals
Studying for ACCA Strategic Business Reporting (SBR) while working full time is tough — but very doable with a plan. The candidates who fail rarely lack intelligence; they run out of structured time. This 12-week plan is built around a working professional's reality: roughly 8–10 focused hours a week.
How this plan works
Twelve weeks splits neatly into four phases:
- Weeks 1–4 — Build the knowledge
- Weeks 5–8 — Apply it to scenarios
- Weeks 9–11 — Practise under exam conditions
- Week 12 — Final polish
Treat each week as a checkpoint. If you slip, don't restart — just carry the topic forward.
Weeks 1–4: Build the knowledge
The goal here is understanding, not memorising.
- Week 1: The Conceptual Framework, and the ethics/professional issues that run through every exam.
- Week 2: Group accounts fundamentals — consolidated statement of financial position and basic adjustments.
- Week 3: Financial instruments (IFRS 9) and leases (IFRS 16).
- Week 4: Revenue (IFRS 15), impairment (IAS 36) and provisions.
Study rhythm: two weekday evenings (~1.5 hrs each) for new content, one weekend block (~3 hrs) to consolidate with a short question.
Weeks 5–8: Apply it to scenarios
SBR is an application exam. Markers reward candidates who explain the accounting in the context of the scenario, not textbook definitions.
- Week 5: Complex groups — step acquisitions, disposals and foreign subsidiaries.
- Week 6: Employee benefits (IAS 19), share-based payments, and deferred tax.
- Week 7: Reporting performance, and analysis & interpretation for the stakeholder on the exam.
- Week 8: Current issues, sustainability and integrated reporting.
For each topic, do at least one full past-exam question and self-mark against the model answer.
Weeks 9–11: Practise under exam conditions
This is where marks are won.
- Sit timed questions — SBR is 3 hours 15 minutes; train your pace.
- Practise Section A (the 30-mark case with ethics) and Section B (two 25-mark questions) every week.
- After each attempt, write down two things to do differently next time.
> The single biggest score booster is exam technique: answering the verb (explain, discuss, assess) and applying standards to the scenario.
Week 12: Final polish
- One full mock under strict exam conditions, marked properly.
- Review your recurring mistakes, not new topics.
- Rest the day before. A calm, well-slept candidate outperforms a crammer.
The three mistakes that fail candidates
- Learning standards in isolation instead of applying them to scenarios.
- Skipping timed practice — running out of time is a top reason for failure.
- Ignoring ethics — it appears in every Section A and is easy marks if prepared.
